Libertarians are neither. Unlike liberals or conservatives, Libertarians advocate a high degree of both personal and economic liberty. For example, Libertarians advocate freedom in economic matters, so we’re in favor of lowering taxes, slashing bureaucratic regulation of business, and charitable — rather than government — welfare. But Libertarians are also socially accepting. We won’t demand laws or restrictions on other people who we may not agree because of personal actions or lifestyles.

Think of us as a group of people with a “live and let live” mentality and a balanced checkbook.

In a sense, Libertarians “borrow” from both sides to come up with a logical and consistent whole — but without the exceptions and broken promises of Republican and Democratic politicians. That’s why we call ourselves the Party of Principle.

Because like it or not, our political system is based on political parties at this time. Many Libertarians would like to do away with the party system and open up elections. However as it stands now, working through the Libertarian Party is the best step for meaningful change.

In fact Independents are now the largest voting block in America at 43%. By pulling the lever for more Republicans or Democrats, you only embolden the status-quo. You strengthen the political extremes. When you support Libertarians, you chip away at the two-party duopoly and create a new political majority.

To advocate against voting at all, there’s no way that a politician can tell the difference between the principled anarchist non-voter and the dude who was too lazy to fill out his ballot. Silence is consent.

Not all politicians are smart, but every one of them can count. They can count how many votes they got and how many votes their opponents got. Only a vote for a Libertarian sends a crystal clear message about what you want, more freedom, and when you want it: right now. If you want to send a message to the old party politicians, a Libertarian vote is the clearest message you can send.

Voting is the easiest thing you can do and we very much appreciate it! However, it takes a party infrastructure to recruit, train and support those candidates- and it takes a lot of financial wherewithal to do all that. You’ll be actively taking a step forward to push our ideas out to the public and you’ll feel good doing it.

As a member of the Libertarian Party you will:
• Be directly supporting the cause. The Libertarian Party does not take special interest money, it relies on the support of people like you.
• Belong to a party that fights for your freedom on all issues, all the time. That consistently defends the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
• Receive our email newsletter and updates on party activities.
• Have opportunities to meet other individuals who share your love for liberty and desire a better, more free and prosperous America.
• Have a say in our party; automatically a delegate to the annual State Convention.

In terms of political activity (i.e. number of candidates, access to the ballot, and elected office holders), the Libertarian Party is the third-largest political party in America. We’re active in all 50 states and have more than 250,000 registered voters.

Around the nation there are Libertarian mayors, city councilors, county executives, and county council members. Libertarians also serve on school boards and in hundreds of local offices. In 2012, more than 15 million votes were cast for Libertarian candidates around the nation.

While we are most successful at the local level for now, we run candidates at all levels of government, even President of the United States.

People like you. People who used to be Republicans, Democrats, and independents – from all walks of life. They joined us because they realize that we’re the only political party working for their best interests. Those who join us realize that, unlike the two major parties, we place the interests of our nation ABOVE the interests of our political party. While the Republican and Democratic parties exist to maintain their own power, we exist to grasp power for the benefit of you and millions of other Americans across our nation.

For the reasonable cost of $30 per year, you can become a Basic Member of the Libertarian Party.

More importantly, if you join our political party and become a Libertarian, you will stand with thousands of other Americans who are proudly committed to bringing about true freedom within our nation.
